Interpretation:
The balanced chemical equation to describe the given process is to be stated.
Concept introduction: When calcium and magnesium comes in contact with water, the water becomes hard. There are two types of hard water: temporary hard water and permanent hard water. Calcium and magnesium hydrogen carbonate is responsible for the temporary hardness in water and permanent hardness is due to the presence of dissolved calcium sulfate. To soften hard water many techniques were applied like addition of slaked lime and the process in known as lime-soda process.
To determine: The balanced chemical equation to describe the process of magnesium ions removal in water by addition of slaked lime.
