Introduction:

The digestion and absorption of food takes place in the alimentary canal or the gastrointestinal tract. The alimentary canal is a multilayered structure and each layer has its own specific function and composition. The food is moved forward and mixed with digestive enzymes by the movements of the alimentary canal. These movements and functions are involuntary.
