Chapter 18, Problem 27E
Speed of light In 1882, Michelson measured the speed of light (usually denoted c as in Einstein’s famous equation E = mc2). His values are in km/sec and have 299,000 subtracted from them. He reported the results of 23 trials with a mean of 756.22 and a standard deviation of 107.12.
- a) Find a 95% confidence interval for the true speed of light from these statistics.
- b) State in words what this interval means. Keep in mind that the speed of light is a physical constant that, as far as we know, has a value that is true throughout the universe.
- c) What assumptions must you make in order to use your method?

Approximate the population mean and standard deviation of age for females. By the way, we find the midpoints by adding the first numbers before the hyphens in the age column and then dividing by 2 (ex: 0+10/2=5, 10+20/2=15, 20+30/2=25).

An EMT wants to see if the average will change if the patient is immediately told the truth about the injury. The EMT randomly selected 58 injured patients to immediately tell the truth about the injury and noticed that they averaged 13 minutes for their blood to begin clotting after their injury. Their standard deviation was 2.55 minutes. What can be concluded at the the a = 0.01 level of significance? a. For this study, we should use Select an answer b. - Poisoning by the pesticide DDT causes tremors and convulsions. In a study of DDT poisoning, researchers fed several rats a measured amount of DDT. They then made measurements on the rats’ nervous systems that might explain how DDT poisoning causes tremors. One important variable was the “absolutely refractory period,” the time required for a nerve to recover after a stimulus. This period varies normally. Measurements on four rats gave the following measurements (in milliseconds): 6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9. Estimate the mean absolutely refractory period for all rats of this strain when subjected to the same treatment.arrow_forwardQuestion 15 From a sample of 100 respondents, the average score on variable F is 25 with a standard deviation of 6; while the average score on variable G is 30 with a standard deviation of 7. Estimate the amount/degree/magnitude of the pattern between F and G that was observed from Jose.arrow_forwardFor healthy adults, the mean pH level is µ = 7.4, a new drug for arthritis has been developed. Use a = 0.05 level of significance to test the claim that the drug has increased the mean pH level of the blood. If we use the classical approach, what would the criterion (step 3) be?
