Concept explainers
To determine: The general features that make the C3b receptor suitable for binding.
Introduction: The immune system involves a complex network of cells, proteins and other elements that play an essential role in defending the body against any infection or invading microbes. It is the host defense system that is activated in response to an appropriate antigen (any foreign substance). This system is present since the time of birth (innate immunity) and has the capacity to adapt itself and develop memory to specific antigens (adaptive immunity) in due course of time.
Explanation of Solution
C3b is the larger of the two elements that are formed by the cleavage of the complement component 3. It plays a significant role in complement system and contributes significantly to innate immunity. The receptor of C3b must has a ligand-binding site, which is specific for C3b only, and due to this, the C3b receptor binds to C3b with high affinity.
