Summary Introduction

To determine: The individual with least and most heterozygous loci from the given microsatellite image.

Introduction: A microsatellite is a segment of repetitive DNA that contains specific DNA motifs repeated anywhere between 5 and 50 times. Numerous sites across the genome of an organism contain microsatellites. They experience more mutations than other parts of the DNA. Microsatellites are frequently employed for DNA profiling, or genetic fingerprinting, of tissues and crime scene stains. They are frequently employed in paternity analysis as well.

Explanation of Solution

In the given microsatellite image, a gel having loci for 5 microsatellites has been represented. The three vertical lanes on the gel correspond to three individuals (1, 2, and 3).

It can be seen from the image that there are 3 alleles for locus 1. At loci 2 and 3, there are 2 alleles. Similarly, at loci 4 and 5, there are 2 alleles.

Individual 1 is not heterozygous at any locus, individual 2 is heterozygous at loci 1 and 2. Individual 3 is heterozygous at loci 1, 3, and 4.

Hence, it is clear that individual 3 has the most heterozygous loci while individual 1 has least (zero) heterozygous loci.

Conclusion

Individual 1 and 3 have the least and the most heterozygous loci.
