The prokaryotes lack a true nucleus and have a very simple cellular design. They are known to be existing since life begin on the earth. They lack organelles and are generally microscopic.

The characteristics of prokaryotes are:

1. Microscopic, the size of the cells is approximately 0.1 to 5.0 micrometre.
2. Lack a true nucleus, genetic material is present in cytoplasm.
3. Membrane bound organelle, such as Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, and chloroplasts are absent.
4. Genetic material is generally shorter in length and circular.
5. Non coding genetic sequences are absent.
