Introduction:
Hemopoiesis is the production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets (erythropoiesis, leukopoiesis, and thrombopoiesis) by hemopoietic tissues. In human embryos, hemopoiesis first occurs in the yolk sac, where subsequently blood islands produce stem cells. These stem cells eventually produce blood cells of the fetus.
