Concept explainers
A fun fact: You can use a microwave oven and a bar of chocolate to measure the speed of light. Really! Microwaves are electromagnetic waves, just like visible light. The difference is the wavelength of these waves: For visible light, the wavelengths are in the neighborhood of
If your teacher is unusually adventurous, he or she might bring in a microwave and chocolate bars, in which case you can perform the experiment on your own. Start with around 20 seconds, and make sure you take out the carousel: The chocolate has to stay stationary. (And now you know why a lot of microwaves have a carousel: Food heats more thoroughly at the spots corresponding to half of the wavelength.)
In case no microwave and chocolate are available, I did the experiment at home and took a picture for you, which is reproduced below. It’s a life-size scale, so you can measure the distance between the melted spots with a ruler.

- Find the intensity of light at a depth of 12 meter if I0=14 and k=0.7. Round to two decimals.arrow_forwardConsidering that the consecutive dials on the natural gas meter rotate in opposite directions, what is the current reading in cubic feet of usage? The initial direction is clockwise.arrow_forwardThe kinetic energy E of an object varies jointly with the object’s mass m and the square of the object’s velocity v . An object with a mass of 50 kilograms traveling at 16 meters per second has a kinetic energy of 6400 joules. What is the kinetic energy of an object with a mass of 70 kilograms traveling at 20 meters per second?arrow_forward
- The ideal diameter of a rod needed for a machine is 75 mm. The actual diameter can vary from the ideal diameterby 0.05 mm. What range of diameters will be acceptable to the customer without causing the rod to be rejected?arrow_forwardFind the unknown value. 27. y varies jointly with x and the cube root of 2. If when x=2 and z=27,y=12, find y if x=5 and z=8.arrow_forwardIn Figure 208, gear A is turning at 120 revolutions per minute and gear B is turning at 3.6 revolutions per second. Determine the ratio of the speed of gear A to the speed of gear B.arrow_forward
- Figure 219 shows a compound gear train. Gears B and C are keyed to the same shaft; therefore, they turn at the same speed. Gear A and gear C are driving gears. Gear B and gear D are driven gears. Set up a proportion for each problem and determine the unknown values, x, y, and z in the table.
