Describe the "theme" of kidney function in a single sentence and list the components of this functional theme.
To review:
The theme of the kidney function in one sentence and the components involved.
Introduction:
The kidneys are the bean-shaped structures located below the rib cage, one on each side. The kidneys are a part of the excretory system which also includes the ureters and the bladder. The basic structural and functional units of the kidneys are the nephron. The kidneys have medulla and cortex structure, the medulla is the internal part of the kidney whereas, the cortex is the external part of the kidney.
Explanation of Solution
Explanation:
The function of the kidneys can be described in one sentence as ‘controlling the extracellular fluid environment’ within the body. This function is achieved by the urine formation in which the kidneys control various aspects such as blood plasma volume, electrolyte concentration, and so on. The kidneys also release erythropoietin which triggers red blood cell production.
The components of this theme of the kidneys include the following:
1. The volume of the blood plasma which also plays role in the regulation of blood pressure.
2. The amount of waste products in the plasma.
3. The concentration of electrolytes such as sodium ions, potassium ions, and others in the plasma.
4. The pH (potential of hydrogen) of the plasma.

- Which of the following does not contribute to the high salt concentration in the interstitial fluid of the kidney medulla? (a) active transport of sodium from the upper part of the ascending limb (b) diffusion of salt from the ascending limb of the loop of Henle (c) reabsorption of salt from various regions of Bowmans capsule (d) counterflow of fluid through the two limbs of the loop of Henle (e) diffusion of urea out of the collecting ductarrow_forwardThe renal handling of a novel drug is being studied. When the drug is present in the blood, it is filtered into the Bowman’s capsule and secreted via transport proteins in the renal tubules, but it is NOT reabsorbed. The lines on the following graph represent filtration, secretion and excretion rates of this drug at various plasma concentrations. For the three lines shown (labeled A-C) identify which line represents filtration, which line represents secretion, and which line represents excretion Explain how you determined this.arrow_forwardName the structural and functional units of kidney.arrow_forward
- A general principle of physiology is that structure is a determinant of—and has coevolved with—function. How does the anatomy of the renal corpuscle and associated structures determine function?arrow_forwardExplain how antidiuretic hormone (ADH) is dependent upon the concentration gradient in the medulla of the kidney.arrow_forwardExplain why the differential permeability of specific sections of the renal tubule is necessary to produce concentrated urine?arrow_forward
- Water though Urinary System Trace the path of the water molecule as it moves from this starting point to this ending point. Starting point: The water molecule enters a kidney in the blood plasma traveling through the renal artery. Ending point: The water molecule is excreted from the body. You may write a description, create a diagram with labels, or both to trace a path. Include as many of the following components of the urinary system and terms as you can: afferent arteriolecollecting ductdistal convoluted tubuleglomerular capsuleglomerulusmajor calyxminor calyx nephron loopproximal convoluted tubulerenal pelvisureterurethra For each of the parts of the urinary system in your path, describe a unique anatomical characteristic (size, tissue composition, etc.) or function.arrow_forwardGive the 4 factors affecting the urine volume in physiological system. Explain how each factor affects the volume of urine.arrow_forwardDrugs that increase urine flow (diuretic drugs) are often employed in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) or other disease states. Three physiological categories of such drugs are ones that (i) function as loop diuretics, (ii) inhibit the action of aldosterone, and (iii) block Na+ channels in the collecting ducts. Explain why each of these categories would be expected to increase Na+ excretion and urine flow.arrow_forward
- Briefly explain three alterations in body function that occur with chronic renal failure. Why do so many renal diseases go undetected until significant damage has been caused to the kidneys?arrow_forwardList and define the three major renal processes.arrow_forwardThe presence of either protein or glucose in a urinalysis is abnormal, but these two molecules end up in the urine for different reasons. For each of these molecules, briefly describe where in the urine production process (i.e., glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption or tubular secretion) the problem occurs, and why it might happen.arrow_forward
