Interpretation:

For each of the unfeasible Grignard reagents shown in Figure 17-10, the complete mechanism of the reaction that would take place is to be drawn.

Concept introduction:

Grignard reagents can be synthesized with a wide variety of alkyl groups. The Grignard reagents are feasible because the strongly nucleophilic and strongly basic carbon will not react with other functional groups present in the molecule. These strong organometallic reagents have significant limitations. Alkyllithium or Grignard reagents must not contain functional groups that are susceptible to deprotonation or to the nucleophilic attack. The carbonyl carbon in aldehydes and ketones is electrophilic and undergoes nucleophilic addition reactions quite readily.
