Concept explainers
Suppose that ¡n a survey of a large, random group of people, 17% were found to be smokers and 83% were not smokers. Suppose further that 0.08% of the smokers and 0.01% of the nonsmokers from the group died of lung cancer. (Be careful: Notice the decimal points in these percentages—they are not 8% and 1%.)
a. What percent of the group died of lung cancer?
b. Of the people in the group who died of lung cancer, what percent were smokers? (It may help you to make up a number of people for the large group and to calculate the number of people who died of lung cancer and the number of people who were smokers and also died of lung cancer.)
