Chapter 16.2, Problem 2BTB
Summary Introduction

To determine:

As if insurance company is expected to pay for the HGH treatment if child shows no hormone deficiency and is simply short.

Introduction:

Growth hormone is responsible for the development of bones and muscles and is released by the anterior pituitary part. The growth hormone is essential for the development of muscles and bones. But if the growth hormone is released in excessive or inadequate amount it causes many defects in humans.

If growth hormone is secreted in excess amount during childhood, it causes gigantism. These people are taller than the normal people and may have health issues.

If growth hormone is secreted in excess amount during adulthood, it causes acromegaly. They have large feet, hands and face.

If the growth hormone level is inadequate in the body, it results in dwarfism or short length of the body. These individuals also show slow development and may be physically disabled in some cases.
