Chapter 16, Problem 16.13P
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

The molecular weight of the chains for the given polymer is to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

The molecular weight of a polymer is not fixed. It has a certain range under which its molecular weight falls. For a linear polymer, degree of polymerization represents the average length of the polymer. Degree of polymerization is defined as:

Degree of polymerization=average molecular weight of polymermolecular weight of repeating unitn= ( MW ) av. ( MW ) repeating unit   ....... (1)

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

The number of chains in the given mass of polymer is to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

The formula to calculate number of chains in the given mass of polymer is:

  Number of chains=m×NA( MW)av.   ....... (2)

Here, m is the mass of the polymer, NA is the Avogadro's number, and (MW)av. is the average molecular mass of the polymer.

Fundamentals Of Energy Systems THQ1 Q5
A short brass cyclinder (denisty=8530 kg/m^3, cp=0.389 kJ/kgK, k=110 W/mK, and alpha=3.39*10^-5 m^2/s) of diameter 4 cm and height 20 cm is initially at uniform temperature of 150 degrees C. The cylinder is now placed in atmospheric air at 20 degrees C, where heat transfer takes place by convection with a heat transfer coefficent of 40 W/m^2K. Calculate (a) the center temp of the cylinder, (b) the center temp of the top surface of the cylinder, and (c) the total heat transfer from the cylinder 15 min after the start of the cooling. Solve this problem using the analytical one term approximation method.
