Concept introduction: The number of signals in a 1 H NMR spectrum reveals the variety of protons present (protons in different electronic environments). Chemically similar protons will only emit one signal since they inhabit the same electronic surroundings. If a symmetry operation—either rotation or reflection—allows for the swap of two protons, then they are chemically identical.
