Erythrocytes are one of the major components of blood. The main function of erythrocytes is to carry oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the cells and tissues. The erythrocytes are also known as Red Blood Cells (RBCs) and they have a protein known as hemoglobin which binds the oxygen molecules and helps in its transfer to different cells and tissues.
