Chapter 15, Problem 39P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reactant molecule for the synthesis of cyclohexene derivative is to be predicted.

Concept Introduction:

The catalyst used is the Grubbs catalyst Cl2(PCy3)2Ru=CHC6H5

Ring closing metathesis for olefins also takes place in which two double bonds belong to the same molecule. In this intramolecular reaction, a new ring is formed.

Most of the times, the reactant molecule contain terminal double bonds. When these terminal double bond reacts, they exchange methylene groups to produce ethylene which bubbles away from the reaction medium.

In this reaction, the cleavage of the double bonds in the reactant alkene molecule occurs and these fragments are redistributed to form new two carbon-carbon double bonds.

In this reaction, new alkenes are formed.
