Explanation of Solution

The total oxygen content of arterial blood is denoted by CaO2. It can be calculated by using the following formula:

CaO2(Hb × 1.34 × SaO2) + (PaO2× 0.003)

Putting the values of Hb as 15 g/dL, SaO2 as 91%, and PaO2 as 57% for calculating the CaO2 of Profile 1, we get:

CaO2(15 × 1.34 × 0.91) + (57× 0.003)CaO2(18.29) + (0.17)CaO2= 18.46

Putting the values of Hb as 15 g/dL, SaO2 as 90%, and PaO2 as 61% for calculating the CaO2 of Profile 2, we get:

CaO2(15 × 1.34 × 0.90) + (61× 0.003)CaO2(18.09) + (0.18)CaO2= 18.27

Total oxygen delivery can be calculated by using the following formula:

DO2= QT× CaO2× 10

Putting the values of QT as 3.83 and CaO2 as 18.46 for calculating the DO2 of profile 1 in the above formula:

DO2= 3.83× 18.46× 10DO2= 707.018 mL O2/min 

Putting the values of QT as 3.1 and CaO2 as 18.27 for calculating the DO2 of profile 2:

DO2= 3.1× 18.27× 10DO2= 566.37 mL O2/min

The difference between DO2 of profile 1 and profile 2 is:

DO2( profile 1)DO2(profile 2)= 707.018 mL O2/min566.37 mL O2/min=140.648 mL O2/min

The best PEEP was 5 cm H2O, which causes 140.648 mL O2/min more than a PEEP of 10 cm H2O.

Therefore, it can be concluded that the best PEEP was 5 cm H2O, which causes 140.648 mL O2/min more than a PEEP of 10 cm H2O.
