Concept explainers
As you enter a fine restaurant, you realize that you have accidentally brought a small electronic timer from home instead of your cell phone. In frustration, you drop the timer into a side pocket of your suit coat, not realizing that the timer is operating. The arm of your chair presses the light cloth of your coat against your body at one spot. Fabric with a length L hangs freely below that spot, with the timer at the bottom. At one point during your dinner, the timer goes off and a buzzer and a vibrator turn on and off with a frequency of 1.50 Hz. It makes the hanging part of your coat swing hack and forth with remarkably large amplitude, drawing everyone’s attention. Find the value of L.

- In Washington, a solar panel facing south angled at 15 degrees receives 0.5 (+/- 0.5) kWh/m^2/day in the winter. Solar panels are 20% efficient. Another 20% of power is lost due to heat. A house uses 45 kW per day in the winter. What is the minimum number of panels needed?arrow_forwardSuppose a battery operates a 2.25 W electric clock for 19.5 months. 1. What is the available energy content, in joules, of the battery? 2. How many years can a battery that supplies 7.75 × 104 J run a pocket calculator that consumes energy at the rate of 1.05 × 10-3 W?arrow_forward6.7 Use the differential equation approach to find i(t) for t> 0 in the circuit in Fig. P6.7 and plot the response including the time interval just prior to opening the switch. 60 12 V 30 1=0 Figure P6.7 ww 2 H (1) 12 02 ww 60arrow_forward
- Solve the equations (1/2)mv2 + (1/2)Iω2 = mgh and v = rω for the speed v using substitution, given that I = mr2 and h = 4.87 m.arrow_forwardWhy electric cars (which are amazing) still stink at towing and going up mountains. A family in Charlotte wants to drive to a campsite next to Mt. Mitchell. Their trip will take them 2km up in elevation. They have the choice of taking their top-of-the-line Tesla model S P10OD, which when fully charged has 100 kWh of stored energy in the batteries (and for this problem is 100% efficient at converting its stored energy into kinetic energy) and a mass of 2200kg, or their choice of taking their 2021 Ford F-150: Gasoline has an energy density of 34.2 Megajoules per liter. The family owns the smallest 2021 Ford F-150, and so it has a fuel tank of 23 gallons. Assume the F-150's engine is able to convert 30% of the energy stored in its gasoline tank into kinetic energy (typical efficiency for gasoline engines), with the rest of the stored energy in the gasoline lost to heat. The mass of this model F-150 is about 2000kg. They are going to tow their big pop-up trailer to the campsite.
