Why do your ears “pop” when you drive up a mountain?
To explain: why do ears “pop” when drive up a mountain.
Answer to Problem 1FTD
Explanation of Solution
At Normal height from the sea level the atmospheric pressure in normal and is balanced by the internal pressure. However, as the height increases the atmospheric pressure decreases and internal pressure remain same. In the ear of man has air filled portion behind the eardrum. There always air pressure equalization occurs.
At high altitude due to pressure difference Eustachian tube get blocked. When this happens ear popping occurs. Thus, ear popping is discomfort experienced by the ear due to the pressure difference.
Conclusion:
At high altitude the atmospheric pressure is low compared to the internal pressure. In order to equalize the pressure in the ear popping occurs.

- Why is it preferable for airplanes to take off into the wind rather than with the wind?arrow_forwardThe Huka Falls on the Waikato River is one of New Zealand's most visited natural tourist attractions. On average, the river has a flow rate of about 300,000 L/s. At be gorge, the river narrows to 20-m wide and averages 20-m deep. (a) What be average speed of the river in the gorge? (b) What is the average speed of the water in the river downstream of the falls when it widens to 60 m and its depth increases to an average of 40 m?arrow_forwardWhen a person feels that he is about to fall, he will often put out his hand to try to break the fall.
