Introduction: Algae include a diverse group of photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms that include organisms ranging from unicellular microalgae to giant multicellular brown algae. They are mostly aquatic and about 70% of the surface of water is covered by algae. The study of algae is known as phycology or algology.

Some of the ecological importance of algae is as follows:
- Algae form the prime contributors of productivity in freshwater habitats such as ponds, streams, and lakes.
- Seaweeds that include red, brown, and green algae are an important prey to herbivores and microbial pathogens.
- The massive brown kelps act as a shelter for several fishes and invertebrates.
- Kelps are also harvested along with seaweeds to manufacture some industrial products.
- The phytoplankton that includes algae and cyanobacteria are the beginning of the food chain in oceans and other water bodies. In oceans, small fishes as well as great whales feed on phytoplanktons.
- The phytoplanktons are also used as a fodder for cultivated shrimps and shellfishes.
- Phytoplanktons also reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as they form calcium carbonate, which fix carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.
- Recently, algae are also used to overcome energy problems as they are involved in the production of biofuel.
