Chapter 15, Problem 15A.2BE
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The Miller indices of the planes that intersect the crystallographic axes at given distances has to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

With the help of Miller indices, a plane in a space lattice can be described.

Notation used:

  • (h,k,l) represents a point.
  • [hkl] represents a direction.
  • hkl represents a family of directions.
  • (hkl) represents a plane.
  • {hkl} represents a family of planes.
  • Negative numbers/directions are denoted with a bar on the top of the number. Ex.-(1¯23).

Procedure:

  • Identify the plane intercepts on the x, y and z-axes.
  • Specify intercepts in fractional co-ordinates.
  • Take the reciprocals of the fractional intercepts.
  • If still a fraction is coming, then multiply with suitable number to get the final answer.

3. Use Kapustinskii's equation and data from Table 4.10 in your textbook to calculate lattice energies of Cu(OH)2 and CuCO3 (4 points)
2. Copper (II) oxide crystalizes in monoclinic unit cell (included below; blue spheres 2+ represent Cu²+, red - O²-). Use Kapustinski's equation (4.5) to calculate lattice energy for CuO. You will need some data from Resource section of your textbook (p.901). (4 points) CuO
