Interpretation:
The same type of bond is broken in an addition reaction and formed in an elimination reaction. The name of that bond has to be given.
Concept Introduction:
The bonds formed in the molecule are two types. They are:
- 1. Sigma bond
- 2. Pie bond.
Sigma bond:
It is a covalent bond formed by end-to-end overlap of atomic orbitals in molecular orbital. It is denoted by a symbol σ.
Pie bond:
It is a covalent bond formed by side-to-side overlap of atomic orbitals in molecular orbital. It is denoted by a symbol π.
If a molecule contains single bond, it is a sigma bond. If a molecule contains double bond, one bond is sigma and other is pie bond. In triple bonded molecules, one is sigma and two bonds are pie-bonds.
