Chapter 15, Problem 10LTB
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
An endangered species refers to a plant or an animal, which is considered on the brink of extinction. A species can be regarded as endangered at the federal, state, and international level. On the federal level, the list of endangered species is monitored by the Endangered Species Act.

One insect species mates on goldenrod flowers, while a second species mates on autumn daisies. The two species are mechanically compatible and the flowers bloom at the same time, but the insects do not interbreed. This is an example of __________ isolation.

Which of the following is not true for a critically endangered species?
Expression of deleterious alleles and increased homozygosity increases mortality of young, and inbreeding depression
leads to reduced offspring fitness
The individuals of the species which have declined to low numbers are still a genetically open system
Loss of some allele from the species causing loss of genetic diversity with consequent inability to respond rapidly to
selection
Reduction of population breeding ability due to increased relatedness through the action of incompatibility mechanisms in
plants or behavioural difficulties in animals
The current wild population is estimated to be about 50 individuals. However, a new threat to red wolves has arisen: hybridization with coyotes (Canis latrans), which have become more numerous in the areas inhabited by red wolves. Although red wolves and coyotes differ in morphology and DNA, they are capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring. Social behavior is the main reproductive barrier between the species and is more easily overcome when same-species mates are rare. For this reason, some people think that the endangered status of the red wolf should be withdrawn and resources should not be spent to protect what is not a “pure” species.

- Populations are unable to sustain exponential growth for very long because environments are not unlimited. Eventually growth rates are reduced by a shortage of food, space or some other factor. These factors constitute what is known as ‘environmental resistance’ and their effect upon growth may produce a logistic growth curve. The data shown in the Table below illustrate this pattern of growth for three species’ populations, each beginning with a population of 10 individuals. In 1957, the pair were able to reproduce for the first time. By 1977, the population had grown to 600 sheep due to abundant food sources and the lack of natural predators in the area. Since then, the Haute Island sheep population has fluctuated between 200 sheep and 600 sheep. In 1990, 250 mouflon sheep were relocated from Haute Island to a neighbouring island with similar terrain, soil, vegetation and weather patterns. The neighbouring island has an area of 10.0 km^2. 1. Ideally, this means you started with a lot of genetically diverse founders, but of course that isn’t always the case. In the case of the Española Galapagos tortoises it was 12 females and 2 males. So, often you have to grow your population to stabilize it and ensure there isn’t an unacceptable loss of genetic diversity over time, even if that genetic diversity is low. If you think back to the math from last week and do a little not so fancy algebra, you can see that genetic deterioration occurs at a rate that is the inverse of genetic retention, which you probably remember is 1- (1/2Ne) Assume that the Española Galapagos tortoise captive population started with an Ne/N ratio of 0.7. Calculate their rate of loss of genetic diversity given their original population size of 14 tortoises (N=14). You will first need to solve for Ne, then plug Ne into the rate of loss of genetic diversity formula. Now let’s work on growing the population.…arrow_forward
