Given information:

Polynomial $(-3x^2+x-1)+(x^2+x-4)$

Opening brackets,

  $-3x^2+x-1+x^2+x-4$

Here, $-3x^2$ and $x^2$ are represented by 3 red tiles and 1 blue tile respectively, $x$ and $x$ are represented by each green tiles, -1, -4 are represented by 1 and 4 red tiles each.

  

    $-3x^2$        $x$    -1    $x^2$    $x$    -4

On solving, $-3x^2$ and $x^2$ subtracts, $x$ and $x$ add, -1and -4 add, making

  

Result is $-2x^2+2x-5$
