Explanation Nomenclature of the 31 pairs of spinal nerves: In order to understand the nomenclature of the spinal nerves, it is necessary to know the anatomical subdivisions of the spinal cord. The spinal cord is divided into four continuous subdivisions from superior end to inferior end as follows: Cervical region Thoracic region Lumbar region Sacral region The sacral region is further subdivided into sacral region and coccygeal region. The nomenclature for the spinal nerves is given based on the region from which it arises followed by Arabic numerals. Each side of spinal cord has 31 nerves. Each nerve pair performs the same set of functions assigned to that pair. The following is the nomenclature of spinal nerves: Spinal nerves that arise from the cervical region are known as cervical (C) nerves . They are eight pairs in number, namely C1. C2. C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, & C8 . Spinal nerves that arise from the thoracic region are known as thoracic (T) nerves . They are twelve pairs in number, namely T1, T2, T3,, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8, T9, T10, T11, & T12. Spinal nerves that arise from the lumbar region are known as lumbar (L) nerves . They are five pairs in number, namely L1, L2, L3, L4, &L5. Spinal nerves that arise from the sacral region are known as sacral (S) nerves . They are five pairs in number, namely S1, S2, S3, S4, &S5.
