Summary Introduction

Introduction

Obedience is simply doing what we are told to do. In many ways, obedience is necessary, and being obedient is viewed as a positive trait. However, blind obedience can lead to trouble. In the 1960's, at Yale University, Stanley Milgram conducted a series of groundbreaking studies to test people's obedience and to find what factors influence this obedience. A number of hypotheses about the formation of obedience have been formed around the results of these studies. Among them, socialization, social comparison, legitimacy, personal investment in the activity, clouded values, and barriers between ourselves and our actions have been demonstrated to have enormous impacts.
