Interpretation:

Around the chiral carbon in carvone structure, the priorities to the groups needs to be assigned using the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog sequence rules. The structural formula for (+) and (-)-carvone showing the R and S configurations needs to be drawn.

Concept Introduction:

Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rule is also known as CIP rule. There are following steps to assign the priority to the groups attached to a chiral carbon according to this rule:

  1. The priority 1 is given to the atom attached to the chiral carbon with highest atomic number. Thus, all the atoms get the priority 1, 2, 3 and so on depending on the decrease in the atomic number.
  2. If there is more than 1 atom attached to chiral carbon with same atomic number (same atom) then the priority is decided by the other atom attached to it. If the second atom is also same, third atom is checked and so on.
