Chapter 14, Problem 1RQ

Why is a low-voltage thermostat normally more accurate than a high-voltage thermostat?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The reason for high accuracy of low voltage thermostat then high voltage thermostat.

Explanation of Solution

Thermostat:

Thermostat is an electronic device which used to sense the temperature of physical system.

Thermostat is of two types.

  1. Low voltage thermostat
  2. High voltage thermostat

Low voltage thermostat:

Low voltage thermostat operating voltage is 525 voltages.

Generally low voltage thermostat is Powered by step down transformer.

It is used in electric furnaces, single stage heat pump and multistage heating and cooling heat pumps.

High voltage thermostat:

High voltage thermostat operating voltage is 130250 voltages.

It is used in wall mounted mini split system, baseboard heaters, single zone system, electric space heaters.

The response of high voltage thermostat which contains a large bimetal would be slow to the air temperature changes thus, low voltages controls are more efficient than high voltage thermostat.
