Mutualism is the phenomenon of interaction in which host cells and pathogens get benefits from the interaction. For example, many populations of the human intestinal tract take out nutrients from the host and release vital vitamins such as vitamin-K as the by-products of metabolism.

This by-product, is further consumed and utilized by the host. In newborn infants, the intestinal tract is not able to produce sufficient bacterial count after birth. Therefore, the intramuscular injection of vitamin K is given to the infant to prevent the bleeding, which found due to the deficiency in vitamin K dependent coagulation factors.
