Chapter 14, Problem 1QQ

Choose the best answer to each of the following. Explain your reasoning.

1.Measurement of how orbital aur vital speed depend on distance from the centre of our galaxy tell us that stars in the outskirts of the Galaxy(a) Orbit the Galaxy center just as fact as stars closer to the center. (b) rotated rapidly on their axes.(c) travel in straight, flatline rather than elliptical Orbit.

To determine

The dependence of the orbital speed of stars on the distance from the center of our galaxy.

Answer to Problem 1QQ

Option (A)

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

The rotation curve is a graph plot that represents the relation between the orbital velocity and the distance from the center for any set of objects.

In the rotation curve of our galaxy (milky way), it is noticed that the orbital speed remains approximately constant, and the curve is relatively flat. This observation indicates that the most of the Milky Way's mass must not be concentrated at its center. Orbital velocity of the star with respect to distance from center behave differently than the orbital velocity of the planet, instead of orbital velocity decreasing with distance like in solar system, it remains constant with respect to distance from the galactic center. So, the star closer to the galactic center have the respectively same orbital velocity as of the distant star.

Conclusion:

Stars in the outskirts of the galaxy orbit the galactic center just as fast as stars closer to the center.
