Summary Introduction

To write:

The benefits of DNA microarray over genetic markers.

Introduction:

Lately, the diseases related to faulty genes have been on a rise. This is seen not only in congenital diseases but cancer too. Thus many procedures have been developed to screen these like DNA microarray, genetic markers and more.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

When genetic markers are used for genetic testing, certain types of nucleotide sequences are searched for and the differences that have arisen in them like STRs (short tandem repeat sequences). For example: An abnormally long STRs could cause a frame-shift mutation. The results are amplified via PCR. Particular diseases (mutation) can be searched for.

In DNA microarray, the complete genome can be tested at ones. The DNA is labeled with fluorescent dyes and put onto the microarray plate which contains allele for mutations. If mutations are present in the genome, the part will bind to the plate and emit fluorescence. Thus, the disease(s) are screened. Herein, multiple diseases can be screened at ones and does not have to be amplified.

Thus, DNA microarray screens for many diseases at ones unlike genetic markers and also takes lesser time. Moreover, the complete DNA microarray procedure is automated, so the chances of human error are minimal.

Conclusion

DNA microarrays are faster and more efficient than genetic markers as they test for multiple diseases at ones and is completely automated.

A negligence action was brought by a mother against a hospital on behalf of her minor daughter. It alleged that when the mother was 13 years of age, the hospital negligently transfused her with Rh-positive blood. The mother's Rh-negative blood was incompatible with and sensitized by the Rh-positive blood. The mother discovered her condition 8 years later during a routine blood screening ordered by her healthcare provider in the course of prenatal care. The resulting sensitization of the mother's blood allegedly caused damage to the fetus, resulting in physical defects and premature birth. Did a patient relationship with the transfusing hospital exist?
