Gyri is an elevation found on the surface of the cerebral cortex. It is surrounded by one or more sulci and fissures. It is made up millions of nerve cells. They provide more surface area for the cortex that helps in engaging in higher cognitive processes. Various kinds of gyrus serve a different purpose.
