As RBCs get old, they become fragile and damaged or worn during traveling through blood capillaries. When the life cycle of the RBCs is complete or it gets damaged, then it phagocytized and broken down by the action of macrophages (Kupffer cells) in the liver and spleen. The hemoglobin of damaged red blood cells then breaks down into heme and globin by hepatocytes.
