Suicide in adolescence is on the rise, internationally, since about 2000 (Bichell, 2016) when the rate fell to a 20 year low. It is rising more quickly for adolescent girls, and under the umbrella term of “self-harm”, has been called the leading cause of death for adolescent girls aged 15-18 by the WHO (Brink, 2015). Why are we seeing a global increase in suicide? What are specific factors that are leading to this increase (global and local)? Are there demographic differences that should be considered (wealth, age, race, etc.) in these statistics? Why is there a gender difference in these statistics? Finally, what evidence-based practices have been shown to reduce suicide?
