All organisms have genomes that are very large in comparison to the size of their cells. The large genome is packaged within a very small space inside the cell with the help of positively charged proteins called histones (in eukaryotes). The genome is coiled to make it smaller. The coiled genome is then, further supercoiled to make it so smaller that it can be accommodated inside the cell.
