The pineal gland is a small, pea-shaped endocrine gland. It is located deep in the brain in the roof of 3rd ventricle. The secretion from this gland, melatonin, is necessary to maintain the circadian cycle. The sensitivity of this gland to the light is necessary for the maintenance of the circadian cycle.
