Concept explainers
To calculate: The water molecules that would remain between the membranes.
Concept introduction: There are many protein molecules involved in the fusion of vesicle. Membrane fusion is facilitated by bringing two lipid bilayer of membrane in close proximity, so that the lipid can flow from one bilayer to another. To accomplish the fusion, the water molecules must be displaced from the hydrophilic surface of the membrane.
To calculate: The number of phospholipids present in each of the opposing monolayers at the fusion site.

To determine: Whether sufficient water molecules are present to bind to the hydrophilic head groups of nine phospholipids or not.
