Introduction

A welfare state is one in which the government provides benefits to citizens in need. The welfare state is seen as an expression of citizenship rights. The United States is a welfare state because it provides unemployment benefits as well as other forms of support to citizens who are in need. This is also an enormous area of contention in politics, as some citizens (and elected officials) balk at the idea of providing such extensive state- or federal-funded support systems.
