Concept explainers
Multiple disk storage systems:
The computers have limited size of main memory to store data. So most of the computers have additional memory devices called as mass storage or secondary storage systems such as magnetic disks, CDs, DVDs, magnetic tapes flash drives etc.
The multiple disk storage systems are the systems which unite many drives and are used to store the data. The multiple disk storage system is also called disk farms.
Cylinder in storage system:
The disk with the magnetic coating is used in the computer. The spinning disk is used to hold the data because read/write heads are placed above and below the disk that transverses a circle due to the spin of the disk called as track and theses track can contains more information.
The read/write heads move in unison and each time read/write heads change their position due to spin of the disk and because of this reposition of disk, there is a new set of tracks which is called as a cylinder.

Computer Science: An Overview (13th Edition) (What's New in Computer Science)
- Transfer rate of a disk drive can be no faster than the bit density (bits/track) times the rotational speed of the disk. Figure 7.15 gives a data transfer rate of 112GB/sec. Assume that the average track length of the disk is 5.5 inches. What is the average bit density of the disk?arrow_forwardLocations on a disk's storage that are in pie-shaped sections?arrow_forwardHow do you refer to robotic optical disk library devices in your native language?arrow_forward
- There is sequence of disk track requests: 75, 62, 99, 144, 50, 162, 110, 26, 198. Assume that the disk head is initially positioned over track 100, and is moving in the direction of decreasing track number. For SCAN algorithm A)What is the tracking order? B) What is Average Track Length?arrow_forwardA disk drive has 1000 cylinders, 8 tracks per cylinder, 32 sectors per track, and 512 bytes per sector. The rotation time is 4ms. The read/write head takes 10ms to move between adjacent cylinders. A data file contains 200KB of data stored consecutively. What is the maximum seek time if the average time needed to read the data is 170ms?arrow_forwardIn what language do you refer to robotic optical disk library devices?arrow_forward
- Suppose a disk drive has the following characteristics: -6 surfaces -16,383 tracks per surface -63 sectors per track -512 bytes/sector -Rotational speed of 7,200 RPM. Please compute a)The capacity of the drive b)The average rotational delay.arrow_forwardData is stored on magnetic disks by flipping the polarity of the magnetic material that holds the information. What procedure does an optical disk use to store bytes?arrow_forwardCalculate how much disk space (in whole sectors and tracks) will be required to store 1GB (230 bytes) of data if a disk is single-zoned with 512 bytes/sector and 1024 sectors/track. Ignore any file header record(s) and track indices.arrow_forward
- Suppose you have a 100GB database housed on a disk array that supports a transfer rate of 60MBps and a tape drive that supports 200GB cartridges with a transfer rate of 80MBps. How long will it take to back up the database? What is the transfer time if 2:1 compression is possible?arrow_forwardPrefetching data from the disk is what it means. In what ways does it excel and in what ways does it falter?arrow_forward3. Polling Consider a system that uses polling to control to its 4 disk drives. Assume that a poll takes 100 nanoseconds to accomplish and that the requirement is that CPU reacts within 10 microseconds of the disk being ready. What percentage of the CPU is required to manage the disk drives?arrow_forward
