The definitions of some terms used in genetics:

Genome: The genome is described as the genetic information of an organism encoded in its genetic material, DNA, or RNA.

Chromosome: The genetic material of an organism (DNA or RNA) is compactly packed into well organized thread-like structures known as chromosomes.

Plasmid: Plasmid is most commonly found in bacteria. Plasmid refers to a circular extrachromosomal DNA molecule within a cell that can replicate separately.

Haploid: Haploid is commonly known as a single set of chromosomes. The organisms reproducing asexually are haploid.

Diploid: Diploid refers to an organism or a cell containing paired chromosomes inherited from each parent.

Genotype: Genotype can be simply defined as the genetic makeup or collection of genes of an organism.

Phenotype: The term phenotype is used for the observable physical traits of an organism.
