Concept explainers
Define “biological species.”
To write:
The definition of biological species.
Introduction:
Biology can be defined as the study of living organisms. It is divided into many particular fields which involve the morphology, behavior, anatomy, physiology, origin, and distribution of organisms.
Explanation of Solution
A biological species can be defined as a group of individuals which can breed together (intra-breed) and cannot breed with other groups (inter-breed). The group shows reproductive isolation from other groups. The concept of biological species states that, a species essentially or potentially can breed with the members of the same species having similar genome. Though appearance is helpful in the identification of species, it does not define a species.
Hence, a biological species can be defined as a group of individuals who can intrabreed and produce a viable offspring.
