Back Pain Treatment In a study designed to test the effectiveness of paracetamol (or acetaminophen) as a treatment for lower back pain, 1643 patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) the 547 subjects in the placebo group were given pills containing no medication; (2) 350 subjects were in a group given pills with paracetamol taken at regular intervals; (3) 546 subjects were in a group given pills with paracetamol to be taken when needed for pain relief. (See “Efficacy of Paracetamol for Acute Low-Back Pain,” by Williams, et al., Lancet, doi: 10.1016/S0140-6736(14)60805-9.) Is this study an experiment or an observational study? Explain.

The typical reaction is a sudden increase in asthma symptoms after eating a food containing sulfites. Studies are performed to estimate the percentage of the nation's 10 million asthmatics who are allergic to sulfites. In one survey, 22 of 400 randomly selected asthmatics in the country were found to be allergic to sulfites. Find and interpret a 90% confidence interval for the proportion, p, of all asthmatics in the country who are allergic to sulfites. Click here to view page 1 of the table of areas under the standard normal curve. Click here to view page 2 of the table of areas under the standard normal curve. The 90% confidence interval is from to. (Round to three decimal places as needed.) Interpret the confidence interval. Choose the correct answer below. O A. Even among addicts trying hard to break the addiction, relapse is common. (A relapse is when a person trying to break out of the addiction fails and uses cocaine again.) A study is conducted to investigate the effectiveness of two drugs, desipramine and lithium, in the treatment of cocaine addiction. The subjects in the six-week study were cocaine addicts seeking treatment. The 72 subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups (desipramine, lithium, or a placebo, with 24 subjects in each group) and the study was double-blind. Relapse No relapse Desipramine 10 14 Lithium 18 6 Placebo 20 4 1.We are interested in knowing whether there was a difference in the proportion of relapse between the two drugs. - A behavioral scientist investigated whether there is a significant difference in the percentages of men and women who purchase silver-colored cars. The scientist selected a random sample of 50 men and a random sample of 52 women who had recently purchased a new car. Of the men selected, 16 had purchased a silver-colored car. Of the women selected, 9 had purchased a silver-colored car. Which of the following is the most appropriate method for analyzing the results? A two-sample zz-test for the difference in population proportions A A two-sample zz-test for the difference in sample proportions B A one-sample zz-test for a sample proportion C A one-sample zz-test for a population proportion D A one-sample zz-test for a difference in sample proportionsarrow_forwardHow would you find (a.) and (b.)?? - Do cell phones increase drivers' reaction times while driving? A 2003 American Journal of Health Education study investigated the effects of cell phone use on reaction time. In the study, 60 participants were randomly selected and placed into one of two groups: the cell phone group or the control group. Those in the control group participated in the experiment with no distractions, whereas those in the cell phone group had access to text documents on a cell phone. Participants in each group were then asked to take a computerized reaction time test. Researchers then recorded each subject's reaction time in seconds. The table shows the results of the experiment. A random sample of 150 of each gender was selected from recent hospital records and the following results were obtained. Can you conclude that a higher percentage of women have high blood pressure? Men: 43 patients had high blood pressure Women: 52 patients had high blood pressurearrow_forwardDoes being part of a support group affect the ability of people to quit smoking? A county health department enrolled 300 smokers in a randomized experiment. 150 participants were assigned to a group that used a nicotine patch and met weekly with a support group; the other 150 received the patch and did not meet with a support group. At the end of the study, 40 of the participants in the patch plus support group had quit smoking while only 30 smokers had quit in the other group. (a) Create a two-way table presenting the results of this study. (b) Answer each of the following questions under the null hypothesis that being part of a support group does not affect the ability of people to quit smoking, and indicate whether the expected values are higher or lower than the observed values. i. How many subjects in the “patch + support” group would you expect to quit? ii. How many subjects in the “patch only” group would you expect to not quit?arrow_forward
