Concept introduction:

In certain plants, microorganisms, and invertebrates, acetate acts as an energy-rich fuel as well as a source of phosphoenolpyruvate which is used in synthesis of carbohydrates. The enzymes of the glyoxylate cycle catalyse the conversion from acetate to succinate or other intermediates having four carbons which are also the intermediates of citric acid cycle. The citric acid cycle is regulated overall by the rate of conversion of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA and also by the flux of other enzymes which participate in the citric acid cycle.
