Summary Introduction

To explain: The way in which the flail chest injury affects ventilation, oxygen levels, and circulation.

Concept introduction: Pulmonary diseases cause episodes of acute respiratory failure. The inadequate alveolar ventilation leads to primary pulmonary failure. There are many conditions that affect the chest wall and pleura as well as influence the function of the respiratory system. Chest flails result from fractures of the thorax, usually rib fractures, sternum fracture, and a number of consecutive ribs.
