Review. A student proposes to study the gravitational force by suspending two 100.0-kg spherical objects at the lower ends of tables from the ceiling of a tall cathedral and measuring the deflection of the cables from the vertical. The 45.00-m-long cables are attached to the ceiling 1.000 m apart. The first object is suspended, and its position is carefully measured. The second object is suspended, and the two objects attract each other gravitationally. By what distance has the first objet I moved horizontally from its initial position due to the gravitational attraction to the other object? Suggestion: Keep in mind that this distance will be very small and make appropriate approximations.

Given the coordinate system shown and that the mass of each ball is 0.150 kg, determine the gravitational field at x=2m, y=0.arrow_forward
- For many years, astronomer Percival Lowell searched for a Planet X that might explain some of the perturbations observed in the orbit of Uranus. These perturbations were later explained when the masses of the outer planets and planetoids, particularly Neptune, became better measured (Voyager 2). At the time, however, Lowell had proposed the existence of a Planet X that orbited the Sun with a mean distance of 43 AU. With what period would this Planet X orbit the Sun?arrow_forwardA system consists of five particles. - Chapter 13, Problem 088 In Pole to Pole, an early science fiction story by George Griffith, three explorers attempt to travel by capsule through a naturally formed (and, of course, fictional) tunnel directly from the south pole to the north pole. According to the story, as the capsule approaches Earth's center, the gravitational force on the explorers becomes alarmingly large and then, exactly at the center, it suddenly but only momentarily disappears. Then the capsule travels through the second half of the tunnel, to the north pole. With what speed would mail pass through the center of Earth if falling in this tunnel? Ignore air resistance.
