To describe: The essential structural and functional difference between a chemical synapse and an electrical synapse.
Concept introduction: A synapse occurs at a specific location of the nervous system, wherein a neuron is connected to another neuron or an effector cell. They permit a neuron to transmit the signal (chemical or electrical) to the target effector cell or to another neuron. The synapse in the human is of two types, namely chemical synapse and electrical synapse.

The resulting sensitization of the mother's blood allegedly caused damage to the fetus, resulting in physical defects and premature birth.
