To determine: The most common childhood cancers and how they differ from adult cancers.
Introduction: Cancer has become a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Cancer is caused due to abnormal cell cycle control system. It is an uncontrolled proliferation of cells that do not stop on depleting growth factors. Cancer cells make own growth factors. Therefore, they do not depend on the supply of external growth factors. Both external and internal factors can cause mutation in the cell that makes it to divide abnormally.
Explanation of Solution
The childhood cancer is rare. However, it is the second leading cause of death in children. The most common childhood cancers are leukemias, brain tumors, and sarcomas. Whereas, the most common types of cancer in adults include prostate, breast, lung, and colon.
The childhood cancer differs from adulthood cancer in following way:
- Most of the adulthood cancers are associated with lifestyle factors, such as smoking and exposure to sun, which are not evident in children.
- Most adult cancers develop from epithelial tissue but most childhood cancers originate from the mesodermal germ layer.
- In general, childhood cancers are fast-growing cancers than adulthood cancers.
