Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Action potential is the response produced when a neuron is depolarized to its threshold level. The neuron’s membrane has ion regulating voltage gated protein channels that allow a particular ion to cross the membrane. At the resting potential, the sodium and potassium channels are closed. As the membrane becomes depolarized, both the sodium and potassium channels open, allowing flow of ions. Due to the electrical and concentration gradients, the sodium ions tend to move into the cell. But the flow of potassium ions across the membrane is very less as the concentration and electrical gradients are in balance.
