Concept introduction:

Distillation is a liquid-gas separation technique for two or more liquids on the basis of their difference in boiling point or vapor pressure. Vapor pressure is the pressure exerted by the vapor phase of liquid produced due to an increase in the kinetic energy of molecules in the liquid phase due to the increase in temperature.

The boiling point is defined as the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid is equal to the atmospheric pressure exerted on the liquid. The boiling point of a mixture depends on the vapor pressure of the components. Impurities in the mixture might result in an increase or decrease of observed boiling point.

The boiling point of any compound at a pressure other than 760torr is difficult to calculate. A nomograph can be used to estimate the boiling point of a compound at reduced pressure or atmospheric pressure.
