The electron configuration for C+ and C is to be written; the ion having a noble gas electron configuration, if any, is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Gain of one or more electrons, results in the formation of an anion. The magnitude of charge on the anion depends on the number of electrons gained.

When a neutral atom loses one or more electrons, it forms a cation. The magnitude of charge on the cation depends on the number of electrons that is lost.

When atoms gain or lose electrons, the number of valence electrons changes. Noble gas elements have eight electrons in their valence shell.
